Mobius (2013)
At the start of Mobius, the audience is introduced to the main character for the short duration that they are with them. The film starts off with the photographer taking a picture of a man being killed by two drug dealers before being seen and running off. However, at the end of the short film the photographer is caught and is about to be killed by the two drug dealers it is revealed that the main character is in a time loop of events as he was the person being killed at the beginning of the short movie as the user could not see before as the shot is blurry. This twist is used to create an element of surprise as the viewers would have seen that coming.
Mobius is apart of the Gangster genre. The audience would be able to notice that it is from this particular genre from the general clothing of the characters such as the: two drug dealers and the props that they have on them such as their guns. The two antagonists are also wielding guns, which they use to kill one character and to shoot the main protagonist's car as they are chasing him down in a suspenseful chase. The two gangsters are dressed like Cowboys which could also be associated with the Western genre. The two gangsters are painted as threats throughout the whole short movie that are a danger to the main characters life whom he must get away from.
As the running time of this film is short, it only has time to focus on 1-4 main characters in the movie. We do not find out much about these characters and will not have time to find out about their backstory as we are only with them for a short amount of time and what they are doing in the moment such as the photographer trying to take pictures of the drug dealers to catch them out.
Mobius uses a variety of camera angles and shots to convey certain themes and elements. The two Gangsters are portrayed as: threatening and powerful; this is shown when low angle shots are used when the main character is shoved onto the floor when the two gangsters are going to kill him. On the other hand, higher angle shots are used to portray the two gangsters to show their dominance
and power over the main character as he meets his demise. A close-up of the Gangster is used to portray his power and upper hand with the weapon he is wielding in hand as he is about to kill the main character.
The colours in the short film Mobius are dark, orange and dull colours. These colours are used when the main character gets lost in the fog and the two gangsters are on the hunt. The dark colours create a theme of suspense and fear as the main character is being hunted to death by the two gangsters. It creates a sense of the unknown and tension as the audience watches on to find out what has happened to the main character as they cannot see them throughout the fog.
Vincent (1984)
Vicent is 6 minutes and 24 seconds long; to be considered a short film, to be considered a short film the running time must be considered to be 40 minutes or less.
Vincent's mise-en-scene has: a black and white colour palette with no other colour present which someone would usually associate with the horror genre. Black and White colours are usually associated with life and death, which is a theme throughout the short film where the main characters imagination believes his 'wife' to be dead and even contemplates on death himself near the end of the short film. Dark colouring normally makes the viewers feel unsettled and creeped out whilst watching the short movie. The Short Movie also has an unsettling art style and overall has a dark and dull colour palette.
Vincent sticks to two main characters, however one (Vincent's mother) is not as important as she only speaks a few words of dialogue and other characters are only mentioned by the narrator. The story tells of 'Vincent' and how he imagines his life to be like and does not have the time to focus on any other characters other than Vincent himself.
In reality, Vincent is a normal young school boy which some viewers may associate himself with. In Vincent, he imagines himself as the actor 'Vincent Prince' and gets so lost in his vivid imagination. Viewers may find themselves to be like Vincent as they may also imagine being greater versions of ourselves in perhaps fantasy settings where anything can be possible and want to escape from our rather boring reality.
There is no sound of music at the start of the short movie, building up anticipation in the audience. By challenging the convention of having music from the start the audience feel tense as they wait for the movie to start. It also creates a fear of the unknown and what Vincent is going to be about as the short film gives no hints what so ever as the film is completely silent at the beginning so the audience could not get an idea of what it could be by the general music.
Good Morning
'Good Morning' follows a Todorov Structure. The main character gets out of bed, brushes his teeth (Equilibrium) but then suddenly he sees his reflection move. After looking closely for a bit and questioning his sanity, his reflection barks back at him catching the viewers off guard. The normality of the situation is broken (Disruption) The main character is now aware that something is wrong and goes back to the mirror to check what he actually saw was real and not his mind making things up (Recognition of Disruption) To try and fight back, he keeps trying to catch his reflections moving about every time he wakes up again ( Attempt to repair the disruption), However in the end he gives up and just returns back to his room accepting the ghosts/reflections in his mirror. (New Equilibrium)
Good Morning only sticks to one entire room throughout the whole short movie. Apart from the FX that is used for the mirror, there is not many other effects so it is safe to assume that Good Morning has a short budget; to add, the short is only 5 minutes long factoring into the short budget.
The short movie is not linked to any studio at all, so the creators of the short movie are just regular people and not known by the public at all.
For a comedy, the short film exaggerates character expressions and actions. To mock the main character, the ghosts pull of silly faces and dances when he is out of the room before he comes in. This may seem humorous to the audience as the Ghosts toy with the main character to annoy and frustrate him as he tries to catch them out to prove that his mind isn't playing at tricks on him.
Like the other Short films, Good Morning is short in length. To be considered a short film, to be considered a short film the running time must be considered to be 40 minutes or less.
